India has stepped into the digital age with FASTag. FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. This system allows vehicles to make cashless payments at toll plazas while in motion, significantly reducing waiting times and traffic congestion. FASTag offers several convenient methods for users to check their balance, including via a toll-free number, online through the issuing bank’s website or the National Highway Authority of India’s official website, the MyFASTag app, and through SMS notifications.
The Working of FASTag
A vehicle with a FASTag attached to its windscreen can pass through a toll plaza without stopping for cash transactions. The toll plaza deducts the toll amount directly from the account linked to the FASTag. However, it’s crucial to keep a sufficient balance in your FASTag account. If the balance runs low, you may have to pay twice the actual toll at toll booths.
How to Check Your FASTag Balance
There are several ways to check your FASTag balance:
FASTag Balance Through Customer Care Helpline
If you’re a FASTag prepaid customer and have registered your mobile number with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), you can find out the FASTag balance by calling the toll-free number 1300 or +91-8884333331. This service is available 24×7.
FASTag Balance Online
Visit the website of the bank that issued your FASTag ID or the official website of the NHAI to check your FASTag balance online. After entering the vehicle number associated with your FASTag account on the balance check or transaction history page, the website will display your current FASTag balance or recent transaction history.
FASTag Balance Through SMS
If you link your FASTag account to your mobile number, you will receive SMS notifications whenever there’s a deduction from your account. These notifications include your account balance, toll payments, recharge confirmations, and low balance alerts.
FASTag Balance in MyFASTag App
The MyFASTag app, available for Android and iOS devices, allows you to check your balance easily. After downloading the app and logging in, you can view your balance at any time.
The Mandatory Nature of FASTag
The Government of India has made it mandatory for all vehicles in India to have a FASTag. This mandate, implemented from February 15, 2021, aims to reduce vehicular traffic at the toll plazas. If a vehicle crosses a toll plaza without a FASTag, it will have to pay double the regular toll charges. Automakers or dealerships supply the mandatory FASTags for the registration of new four-wheelers. From April 1, 2021, you need a valid FASTag to obtain new third-party insurance.
