The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon release ₹20 banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. These notes will bear the signature of the new RBI Governor, Shri Sanjay Malhotra.
What’s New?
These ₹20 notes will feature the signature of Shri Sanjay Malhotra. He recently took charge as the RBI Governor.
However, the design and features will remain unchanged. The size, color, security elements, and motif will be the same as the existing ₹20 notes.
What About the Old Notes?
There’s no need to worry if you have older ₹20 notes. All previously issued ₹20 notes will remain valid. You can continue using them for transactions as usual.
In short, both old and new notes will be legal tender.
A Quick Look at the ₹20 Note Design
The ₹20 note in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series was first introduced in April 2019. It has a greenish-yellow color and features the Ellora Caves on the back.

Why Does the RBI Issue New Notes?
Every time a new RBI Governor is appointed, fresh notes are issued with the new signature. This is standard practice.
But importantly, older notes with signatures of past governors remain valid.
What Should You Do?
You don’t need to do anything. The new ₹20 notes will appear soon at ATMs and bank counters.
You can use them just like your existing notes.
